Indiana Republican congressman Todd Rokita is reportedly planning to introduce a bill Monday that would threaten prison time and fines for elected officials who have been accused of sheltering illegal immigrant criminals from deportation.
The bill, known as the “Stopping Lawless Actions of Politicians (SLAP) Act,” moves to impose sanctions that exceed the Justice Department’s threats of cutting off funding and grants to jurisdictions that shelter illegal immigrants.
According to Fox News, the bill would reportedly subject those who fail to comply with federal immigration enforcement efforts to a $1 million fine and up to five years in prison if convicted.
“Politicians don’t get to pick and choose what laws to comply with,” Rokita said. “Americans are dying because politicians sworn to uphold the law refuse to do so.”
Rokita also expressed the anger that the American people have toward politicians who refuse to uphold immigration laws designed to protect them.
“The American people are rightfully infuriated watching politicians put their open-borders ideology before the rule of law, and the safety of the people they represent,” Rokita said, according to WYRZ.
American citizens who are “infuriated” with politicians’ refusal to comply with federal immigration law include the father of Kate Steinle and the father of Jamiel Shaw II.
Steinle was walking on a San Francisco pier with her father in 2015 when she was fatally shot by Jose Ines Garcia Zarate — an illegal immigrant who had been deported back to Mexico five times before his fateful encounter with Steinle.
“There’s no other way you can join it. Justice was rendered, but it was not served,” Steinle’s father Jim said upon learning Thursday that Zarate was acquitted on charges of murder, manslaughter and assault with a deadly weapon.
Jamiel Shaw Sr., a father who experienced tragedy after his 17-year-old son was shot and killed by an illegal immigrant who was “on his third gun charge,” gave his thoughts on the Steinle verdict.
Shaw called the “activist” jury a group of “left-wing nut jobs” who only wanted to acquit Zarate in an attempt to spite President Donald Trump.
“He’s going to be the one that so-called takes down Trump,” Shaw stated. “That’s all they cared about.”

As reported by The Western Journal, the jury did convict Zarate on a lesser weapons charge for which he faces up to three years in prison if convicted.
Rokita is currently in a six-person Republican primary race the U.S. Senate seat currently occupied by Democrat Joe Donnelly.
According to The Indianapolis Star, Rokita has tried to gain an edge on his opponents by aligning himself with Trump’s agenda.
